A name revisited

As demonstrated here, the meaning and reputation of “libertarianism” as a political philosophy continues to be fertile grounds for tons of internet discussion.  Aside from the usual demonstrations of talking past each other, there’s an additional strain in that comment thread along the lines of “well, that’s what you say it means, but your interpretation doesn’t get much traction”.

From an institutional standpoint I’ve explained why that is.  That said, if I claimed to not at least consider the possibility that the term is lost as a useful description, I would be lying.  Not that the words we call what we believe matter anywhere near the actual substance of them, but it’s kind of hard to have a debate between people speaking different languages who don’t understand each other, y’know?
