The Meaning of Gesture

In case anyone was wondering, I basically spent the last few days taking it easier than usual, and enjoying the company of relatives.  A fitting thing to do.  During that time, I came across this, an observation on Slate about the gap between claimed religious practice & actions in the U.S.  Having let it simmer long enough, here’s what I thought about it:

While it’s no shock that identity — and, of course, identity politics — plays into the answers to surveys about stuff like church attendance, IMO the question makes the same (wrong) assumption that the ones responding do, that moral foundation requires organized religion.  The results of those surveys would look quite different without that assumption, don’t you think?

In related news: I think the Vikings pissed off Baby Jeebus…
