Kevin Drum notes that poll results on the upcoming marijuana legalization vote in California appear to have a discrepancy based on anonymity of the participant, and provides a helpful chart. Within that, I noticed something super ironic:
The chart includes a breakdown by race. In the automated version of the poll, support jumped for every racial category…except for Latino. In that segment, support for legalization actually went down.
Obviously, merely wanting marijuana legalized isn’t an indication of desire to roll a blunt. Still, considering the shamelessly bigoted roots of “our” drug laws, particularly the racial stereotype of gangs of perpetually stoned marauding Mexicans having their way with the nation’s supply of white women, this is rich.
