Logic Detail of the Day

From Steve Benen’s “quick hits”:

* The Wall Street Journal would have you believe the Affordable Care Act is causing health insurance companies to raise their premiums.

Well…it depends on how technically you take it.  The companies in question have actually said that not much of their rate hikes are for compliance with the Turd Sandwich.  In that way, no it’s not the cause.  But thanks to the individual mandate, whatever rates come up when that provision goes into effect, people have to eat it, with a tax penalty if they don’t.  So the WSJ has a point, though not in the way they think: the hikes weren’t a matter of increased cost, but the inevitable result of creating a captive market.  If you had a population that was forced to buy from you regardless, why would you keep the prices low?  They have to buy it anyway!
