Re: gay rights & the Human Rights Camapign: What Ioz said.  Additionally, it’s contradictory to scramble for a tone of concilation on a matter that is defined in terms of rights, and up against people who think you’re basically an abomination amounts to headbutting a brick wall.

As far as gay marriage goes, I’ve never really followed the civil rights strategy.  The reason behind my own view of LGBT relationships has, as far back as I can remember, been “why do you CARE?”.  Realizing that what consenting adults do to each other has about as much bearing on your quality of life as one blade of grass in your lawn being shorter than the others solves a lot.

If I were in charge of any kind of ad/propaganda campaign on this, I’d lean towards a message that didn’t use the language of civil rights & a veneer of assumed normality, but an open questioning of why anyone gives a shit.  Unless you’re a self-hating closet dweller, there’s no such thing as a case against sexual equality that doesn’t consist of some mix of bible-thumping & childish “EEW!” factor*.

(* – notice how much of the opposition talk is male-centric?  Lesbians don’t have enough of an “ick” because many men have fantasies of watching hot femmes go at it.  Two dudes going In the Out door, on the other hand…jackpot!)

One Response to Uncivilize

I take it a little further and go with the open and affirming stance. I want my gay friends to be happy and to be able to be their gay selves openly.

As for the slippery slope discussion in the comments, I don’t see how you get from approval of adult consenting same sex to sex with children. They’re not on the same slope. They’re not even on the same mountain.
